Epiphone EM 1 Rebel (1992, Made In Korea). Fantastic guitar made in the early 90s by Epiphone, their version of Gibson's M series of guitars.

Very thin and comfortable body with distinctive continuous C shaped cutaways and reverse hockey stick headstock. Wide 12 radius fretboard is very comfortable and allows lots of room for manoeuvring. It was professionally set up a few years ago with very good action and strung with 10-52 Elixirs, so it's great to play, especially for heavier music. Great sounding pickups in H-S-H configuration with an unusual switching pattern allowing for 9 different tones.

There is a switch which allows choosing between two'modes' which affect the operation of the 5-way selector: one splits the humbuckers making it function exactly like a Strat with 3 single coils and their'inbetween' positions, and the other offers 4 different settings using the humbuckers is well as a silent bypass setting. I've included a diagram in the photos to illustrate how this works.

I have owned and gigged this guitar for nearly 20 years so it has accrued some wear and a few alterations over the years. Bridge and tremolo block replaced around 10 years ago. Coil split switch replaced but functions as before. Volume and tone knobs not original but replacements are identical. Various chips and dings from many years of use, all pictured. Worst ones are on the back so they're not too obvious. Tremelo system cavity cover missing. Discolouration on the finish where there have been stickers applied previously. Impression of bass guitar string indented into the fretboard from when an overly enthusiastic bassist got a touch too'rock'n'roll' (pictured). I can only assume the pickups are original, but the only pictures I can find of this model show either uncovered humbuckers, or gold covered ones. These look more like the ones that came with the EM-2, but that model had a Floyd Rose style tremolo. They sound very good anyway. I had planned to make a project out of refinishing this, but my taste in guitars has shifted over the years to more vintage Fender style guitars and this no longer fits in my collection. Excellent project for someone with the skills, or an interesting'pre-reliced' obscure piece of Epiphone/Gibson history that sounds and plays great.
